Barbados is a sovereign island country which is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic, east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. It has an estimated population of 284,000 people, with around 80,000 living in or around Bridgetown, the country's capital.
The Barbados Football Association (BFA) is more than 100 years old having been founded in 1910. It was originally named the Barbados Amateur Football Association, but that title was changed in 1925. The BFA became affiliated to the FIFA in 1968 and is also an affiliated to CONCACAF and the the Caribbean Football Union. Barbados' international football matches are played primarily at the National Stadium, Waterford, St. Michael. The BFA is developing a home for football, for the training and development of the game, to include an international size football field, administrative offices and team facilities on land the Government has provided at the Garfield Sports Complex, Wildey. The Barbados Premier Division or Digicel Premier League is the top football league in Barbados and was founded in 1947. The league is contested between 10 teams every season. The most successful soccer club is Weymouth Wales followed by Notre Dame SC. Below the top tier the league structure comprises Division One (1 section of 12 teams), Division Two (3 sections of |
between 12 and 15 teams) and finally Division Three (4 sections of between 12 and 14 teams). The leagues are administered by the BFA and there is a system of promotion and relegation between the tiers.
Thee Barbados FA Cup is the top knockout tournament of the Barbados football. The cup was created in 1910 and the most successful clubs in recent decades have been Everton, Pride of Gall Hill and Notre Dame SC. |
