The Nemzeti Bajnokság I (officially known as OTP Bank Liga) is the top league competition for association football clubs in Hungary. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Nemzeti Bajnokság II.
Nemzeti Bajnokság I (National Championship I) was created in 1901 by the Hungarian Football Federation and was first won by Budapesti TC. Ferencváros TC have won the most championships, closely followed by MTK Budapest and Újpest FC. Nemzeti Bajnokság II (National Championship II) is the second tier of the Hungarian football league system and since the end of the 2004/05 season has comprised two division, known as Keleti (Eastern) and Nyugati (Western), each with 16 teams. From NB II, the three lowest teams are relegated to NB III. Nemzeti Bajnokság III (National Championship III) is the third tier of Hungarian football and contains 6 groups of 15-16 teams. There is a system of promotion and relegation to the local divisions (Megye I) which form the fourth tier. |
Four of the groups are named after rivers, namely Alföld, Dráva, Duna and Tisza. The other two groups are named after the mountainous regions of Bakony and Mátra.
The Hungarian Cup is known as the Magyar Kupa and was founded by the Hungarian Football Association in 1910. The most successful club has been Ferencvárosi TC followed by MTK Budapest, Újpest FC and Budapest Honvéd. |
