The top 4 levels in Danish football are governed by the Danish Football Association. The top 3 are collectively called Danmarksturneringen (Danish Championship). The Danish Superliga (Superligaen in Danish) is the highest association football league in Denmark and is currently contested by 12 teams
The Danish 1st Division has been the name of the second highest football league in Denmark since 1991. From 1945 to 1991 the 1st Division was the name of the highest level of football in Denmark. With the formation of the Danish Superliga, the second tier of Danish football became the 1st Division. While all the teams in the Superliga are full-time professional the 1.division has a mixture of full-time professional and part-time professional teams. |
The 2nd Division is the third tier Danish football league, and comprises two divisions, with 16 teams in each, covering the east and west of the country. Below is the fourth tier known as the Denmark Series and comprises 3 divisions. This tier is in turn fed by 5 regional leagues.
The Danish Cup (Landspokalturneringen) is the official "knockout" cup competition in Danish football, run by the Danish Football Association. The cup has been contested annually since 1955 and is currently known as DBU Pokalen.
