The Maltese football leagues system of association football is made up of a set of 4 leagues organised and controlled by the Malta Football Association.
Malta has had a top level football division since 1909 and is currently known as the Premier League. Below are the First, Second and Third divisions with promotion and relegation between each. The Maltese Premier League is known as BOV Premier League and comprises 12 teams. Three clubs have dominated the championship, namely Sliema Wanderers, Floriana and Valletta but over the last decade the top division has also been won by Hibernians, Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk. In total there are 43 clubs participating in the Maltese league system. As part of league restructuring in 2011 the number of clubs was increased in the top three divisions while the Third Division was reduced from two to one division. There are hopes in the future that clubs from the island of Gozo will participate in the Maltese Leagues. |
The national cup competition is the Maltese FA Trophy which is currently known as the U*Bet FA Trophy. The competition was established in 1933 and the most successful club is Sliema Wanderers. Since 2011 clubs from Gozo have participated in the competition.
