Moldova is a landlocked nation in Eastern Europe located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The country has a population of 3,559,500 and the capital city is Chișinău. It declared itself an independent state in 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The Football Association of Moldova (Federaţia Moldovenească de Fotbal) is the governing body of football in Moldova and is based in Chişinău. The FMF organises the football league, the Moldovan National Division, and the Moldova national football team. The organisation was founded in 1990 and became affiliated UEFA in 1993 and to FIFA in 1994. The Moldovan National Division (Divizia Naţională) is the highest football league in Moldova. The competition was established in 1992 and there are currently 12 teams in the competition. The schedule consists of three rounds. During the first two rounds, each team plays each other once home and away for a total of 22 matches. The pairings of the third round are then set according to the standings after the first two rounds, giving every team a third game against each opponent for a total of 33 games per team. The most successful Moldovan club since independence is Sheriff Tiraspol followed by Zimbru Chisinau. In Soviet times, between 1945 and 1990, Dinamo Kishinyov had the most championship wins followed by Grenicherul Glodyany. Below the top tier, the league structure comprises Divizia "A" (1 section of 16 clubs) and Divizia "B" (3 sections serving 32 clubs). The leagues are administered by the FMF and there is a system of promotion and relegation between the tiers. |
The Moldovan Cup (Cupa Moldovei) is the national knockout cup competition in Moldovan football. It was first held in 1992 and the most successful club has been Sheriff Tiraspol. Around 50 teams enter the competition from the National Division, Divizia "A" and Divizia "B". In Soviet times, between 1945 and 1990, Dinamo Kishinyov had the most cup wins.
